Bird Feeders
By installing a bird feeder, bird watchers can attract and feed their favorite feathered friends. Bird feeders let you keep your favorite birds around with a steady supply of their preferred food. They also provide the means for learning and fun; you can take up an educational bird-watching hobby yourself, or teach children of all ages to understand and appreciate many winged wonders.
Location and mounting
If you want to spend some leisure time bird watching, choose a general location where you can comfortably and discretely observe the bird feeder. Picking a place to mount a bird feeder will depend partly on the type of bird feeder you want to use. They can be installed in a variety of locations such as a porch or deck, fence, wall, or on top of a pole. Bird feeders usually come with installation hardware, and some can be installed in a variety of ways, while others are meant just for suspension, or just for stationary mounting (especially larger, heavier bird feeders).
Tube feeders
These feeders are made with a cylinder designed to hold and dispense bird seed, usually making it available from a number of portal holes. Tube feeders are often made from a combination of metal and strong plastics to keep squirrels out. Some tube feeders are made with very small feeding portals, designed to hold small seeds to feed small birds, such as finches.
Suet feeders
Suet feeders consist of metal caging to hold a suet cake. Suet attracts birds that naturally eat insects. These bird feeders can include eye-catching details, and sturdy, attractive suspension chains.
Hummingbird feeders
Hummingbirds like to drink nectar (you can mimic nectar at home by making a sugar and water solution). Hummingbird feeders are bright and colorful. They usually have feeding portals, made from plastic, that look like flowers. The nectar is kept safe and clean in a glass or plastic cylinder.
Bird feeders make everyone happy—the birds enjoy a meal and you enjoy some great natural entertainment. |
