Bird Houses
Whether you prefer bird houses that are simple and natural, or bold and theme-based, bird houses provide a safe home for your favorite feathered friends.
Bird houses and trees
Bird houses, in their many varieties, can be mounted differently, depending on a few different variables. If you have a wooded area in mind for installing a house, you might choose to suspend a bird house from a tree branch (thick, stable branches are always best, especially for larger versions); or, you could choose one that is designed to mount directly to the thick, stable trunk of the tree itself.
Mountings
Bird houses that mount directly to a tree trunk look just as charming on an exterior house, garage, or shed wall. If the trees in the area are not mature enough for installing a bird house, or if you have no trees at all, you could suspend a hanging house from a covered patio or porch. Very large bird houses work well with mounting poles (the pole is often included). Mounting poles can support the bird house at varying heights—even up to 15 feet. As long as the mounting pole is correctly installed, the house will be a safe shelter.
Popular materials
Two of the most popular materials used to make bird houses are cedar and aluminum. Cedar works well because of its longevity—it naturally resists rotting, so you can enjoy observing the house, even after multiple occupants have come and gone. Aluminum is popular because its light weight allows for bigger bird houses that aren’t extremely heavy.
Convenient features
Many bird houses, especially larger ones, include panels or removable components that allow you to periodically clean it. Some bird houses provide adjustable sizing which allows you to simply add another unit as the bird colony grows in number.
