Blue Bird Houses

The beautiful blue bird was once a very common bird in the United States. Because of pesticides and the destruction of their natural habitat, there are few blue birds remaining today. An easy way to attract these graceful creatures and assist in the repopulation of this rare bird is with a blue bird house. These decorative nesting boxes look nice nailed to a tree or wooden pole.

Learn more about blue birds
Related to the American Robin, the blue bird is a wonderful bird to have around. They eat huge amounts of insects, including grasshoppers and cutworms. They're a natural way to protect our gardens from these destructive bugs. Years ago the House Sparrow and the European Starling were brought to North America. These birds have contributed to the diminishing blue bird population. For optimal blue bird survival, it is important to keep these more aggressive birds away. Additional questions about this and other blue bird information can be obtained from the North American Bluebird Society.

Blue bird houses
Blue birds are naturally attracted to the smell of cedar. Because of this, many houses are constructed using cedar. Some houses are painted and look like miniature cottages. Most houses are simple and functional in design. It is recommended that the houses are situated about five feet from the ground. This is high enough to protect them from predators, but low enough so you can enjoy watching them fly in and out. A blue bird house makes a cozy, warm shelter where birds are safe from inclement weather and predators.

After installing a blue bird house, it might be a good idea to also provide a food source for the birds. The majority of a blue bird's diet is insects, but it also likes suet. Don't forget to provide a water source for the birds. A decorative bird bath is one popular option.

Protect the magnificent blue bird and beautify your yard with a blue bird house. You'll not only be aiding in the survival of a species, but you'll be creating a lovely outdoor environment for you and your family to enjoy.
